pocketknife

1. It hits our fundamental goals

  • - Timeless.  It's not too trendy, not too boring. It's a timeless tool, useful 100 years ago, still useful in another 100 years.

  • - Safe. Doesn't really have weird/sketchy/ offensive connotations (that i can think of)

  • - Simple. The word itself is easy to say, recognizable, looks good and sounds good.

  • - Real. It exists in time and space. I think this is an important distinction because so many of the other names are intangible... League, Batch, etc. I like Pocketknife because you can picture it and hold it and imagine using it. Which I think will help people connect with it more.

2. Themes

  • -Utility. Especially when you think of a swiss-army style, it's a tool that's ready for anything. It has many skills. It can cut rope, open an amazon box, carve a stick for roasting marshmallows on a campfire, open a beer, etc. While it's small and compact, its utility-to-size ratio is higher than basically any other tool.

  • - Midwestern vibes. If you grow up on a farm or in the country you know you gotta have one. It's a simple tool used by working men.

  • - Boyhood/fun. Amongst the team, we've talked about making sure the brand name had some fun and some of our personality in it. I think this strikes the right balance. Still simple enough to be professional, but there's definitely references to youth, growing up, being a boy. Tearing through the woods, carving your initials into trees and shit.

  • - Creativity. It's a tool that let's you build anything. It's kind of like a blank canvas. There's no limit to what you can carve or build. When you use it, you create something new with your hands. Handcrafted with attention to detail... which is exactly what we want people to see in our work.

3. Practical Shit

  • - Two Words, One word... It's kinda both. I think we could use it the same way Instrument uses their name. It's long enough to not feel like an App, but strong and simple enough to be used on its own.

  •

  • - Domains: I checked and there are some decent domains we could get:

    • madebypocketknife.com
      wearepocketknife.co

    • thisispocketknife.com

    • pcktknife.com

    • pocketknifeteam.com

    • pocketknifeco.com

  • - We could (but don't have to) get creative with the spelling. Start thinking along the lines of "Poler" - PCKTknife etc.

  • - Imagery: So much we can do with it.  Maybe it could be fun to have different "things" folding out of the knife. Like those pocketknives that have forks and spoons coming out of them -  Something unexpected... Or, we can stick with the classic pocketknife, or maybe there's something engraved on it... I'm just brainstorming now, but the point is, there's a lot you can do with it.

4. Conclusion

  • I think it's the strongest candidate thus far, because it hits all the bases and balances all of our different goals. And I wanted to make a strong pitch because I've thought a lot about it and we're at the point that we need a strong direction to make a decision. Thanks for reading!
